The quick answer
Start with the platform your broker or prop firm account actually uses. MT4 and MT5 indicators, Expert Advisors and compiled files are not interchangeable by default. Then decide whether you need visual analysis and alerts, automated execution, or both. Finally, test the exact product version and settings against your own account conditions before risking money.
MT4 vs MT5: what should you check?
MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 are separate trading platforms with different technical environments and capabilities. MetaQuotes publishes an official MT5 vs MT4 platform comparison. For a purchaser, the practical question is not which platform is universally “better”, but which one is supported by the account and product you intend to use.
| Check | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Account platform | Your broker or prop firm may provide MT4, MT5, or a different terminal. | Confirm the terminal shown in your account dashboard before buying. |
| Correct software file | Platform-specific files and source code are not interchangeable by default. | Confirm you receive the matching MT4 or MT5 build and installation instructions. |
| Trading conditions | Prices, spreads, commissions, symbols and execution can differ by broker and account. | Test on the same symbol, timeframe and account type you expect to use. |
| Testing tools | Strategy testers and available modelling options differ between platforms. | Use appropriate historical data and document the test conditions and limitations. |
Indicator or Expert Advisor: understand the difference
A custom indicator analyses market data and can draw information on a chart, produce signals or issue alerts. An indicator by itself does not automatically place trades simply because it shows a buy or sell signal.
An Expert Advisor (EA) can implement trading rules and, when configured and permitted, send orders to the trading server. The exact behaviour depends on the EA, terminal settings, permissions, broker conditions and account rules. Review the product documentation to see whether it only displays a signal, assists execution, or can open and manage trades automatically.
The official MQL5 Reference describes the program types and technical capabilities used in MetaTrader 5. Do not assume an EA and its companion indicator have identical requirements or that an MT4 file will run on MT5.
Check the prop firm's actual rules before trading
Prop firm programmes can set limits on daily loss, total drawdown, trading days, consistency, news trading, holding positions over weekends, position sizing and prohibited strategies. These terms can vary by provider, programme and account type—and they can change. Read the rules for your specific account rather than relying on a generic checklist or an indicator seller's summary.
- Daily and overall loss: learn how losses are calculated, including whether floating profit and loss, commissions and swaps count.
- Position size: check whether lot sizing, exposure and the possible stop-loss amount fit the account's limits.
- Execution restrictions: verify rules on high-impact news, overnight or weekend positions, copy trading, latency-sensitive methods and automation.
- Consistency or payout terms: check the current wording and the calculation method, including any conditions that apply before a withdrawal.
- Technical permissions: confirm that EAs, indicators, VPS use and the broker/terminal combination are allowed.
How to evaluate a backtest properly
A backtest is useful only when you understand what it tested. A headline profit, win rate or screenshot is not enough to establish how a strategy may behave in live trading. Ask for the settings, period, instrument, timeframe, data source and assumptions behind the result.
- Data and coverage: check the dates tested, history quality, symbol and timeframe. A short or selectively chosen period may not reflect different market regimes.
- Trading costs: look for spreads, commissions, swaps and any slippage assumptions. Unrealistic costs can make results look stronger than they would be in practice.
- Risk and drawdown: review maximum drawdown, consecutive losses, exposure, risk per trade and whether the sizing assumptions match your intended account.
- Every trade, not just winners: understand how losing, skipped, open and closed trades are counted. Separate gross results from costs and distinguish historical simulation from actual live execution.
- Validation: test on a different period where possible and forward-test the exact release on a demo account. Avoid endlessly changing settings solely to fit past data.
MetaTrader 5 includes Strategy Tester facilities, documented in the official testing reference. Tester output is still a simulation; the quality of data, configuration and assumptions matters.
What “repainting” and “no lag” claims really mean
Ask what the seller means by “non-repainting” and which release, settings and timeframe were tested. A signal that is only confirmed after a candle closes can be more stable than one that changes while the candle is still forming, but it necessarily waits for confirmation. It is not the same as having no delay, and it does not guarantee that a trade will fill at a displayed level.
Request a clear explanation of when a signal becomes final, whether past chart markers can change, and how the product handles live ticks and historical recalculation. Verify the claim yourself by observing closed candles and keeping a record of signals during forward testing.
Pre-purchase checklist
Use this list for any MT4 or MT5 prop firm indicator, trading signal tool or EA—not only one brand.
- The product supports the exact platform and terminal version on your account.
- Installation, licence terms, supported symbols and required companion files are documented.
- Signal confirmation and repainting behaviour are explained for the specific release.
- Backtest dates, data source, settings, spread, commission and drawdown are disclosed.
- The trade sizing and stop-loss approach can be adapted to your risk limits.
- Your prop firm's current automation, news and drawdown rules have been checked.
- You have time to test the exact product on demo and verify alerts, entries and exits.
- You understand that losses are possible and results are neither guaranteed nor assured to be typical.

Is MT5 always better than MT4 for prop firm trading?
No. The relevant choice depends on the platform supported by your account, the software available for it, broker conditions and the testing or execution features you need. Confirm compatibility before purchase.
Can an indicator guarantee that I pass a prop firm challenge?
No. Results depend on market conditions, execution, risk management, your settings and the firm's rules. A trading tool cannot guarantee that you pass an evaluation or receive a payout.
Does a high backtest win rate prove an EA is reliable?
No. Win rate alone does not show average win versus loss, drawdown, trading costs, sample size or robustness. Review the whole report and validate the strategy under realistic conditions.
Should I use an EA on a live or funded account immediately?
First check the account's rules, install the right files, test the exact release on a demo account and inspect order size, stops, execution and error handling. Monitor it rather than assuming automation removes risk.
Does a closed-candle signal mean there is no lag?
No. Waiting for a candle to close is a form of confirmation and therefore waits until that candle is complete. It may help make the signal rule clearer, but it is not a promise of zero delay or future accuracy.
